Andrew Marcus wants freckles but he wasn't born with them. Student will enjoy learning about conflict (and, later, resolution) while reading Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. This meeting introduces an easy to use chart to help readers learn to track conflict and resolution throughout the text.

During this Book Club meeting, students will learn that a plot is often composed of a main conflict/resolution and several smaller conflicts/resolutions. Author Judy Blume incorporates both primary and secondary conflicts and resolutions in Freckle Juice for readers to identify.

Freckle Juice is interesting, in part, because author Judy Blume used a variety of conflicts and resolutions that keep the reader engaged. Students will practice identifying conflicts and their resolutions and learn the impact of not resolving the conflict right away.

Sometimes, the resolution to a conflict causes a new conflict. This Freckle Juice Book Club meeting encourages students to identify which conflicts are caused by another conflict's resolution.

The connection between the primary and secondary conflicts and resolutions can sometimes be referred to as the "Domino Effect". Author Judy Blume uses this technique in Freckle Juice where Andrew's desire for freckles sets off a series of conflicts.

Use this six-question assessment to determine whether or not students understand the key concepts associated with conflict and resolution.
