Kick off the Mercy Watson to the Rescue Book Club with an interactive activity to focus students on point of view. Explore how people can be shown the same object, but come away with very different impressions of what they saw. Then, apply this concept to the characters in Kate DiCamillo's story.

Your readers may already be familiar with the concept of "putting themselves in someone else's shoes", but what does that mean when applied to the characters in a story? Using Kate DiCamillo's Mercy Watson to the Rescue, students will practice reading aloud from various character's "shoes" to help them better understand the character's actions, words, and/or feelings during events in the story.

Now that readers have gotten to know the characters in Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo, they can easily demonstrate their ability to distinguish varying points of view by anticipating how the characters would respond to some "silly" situations.

This final Mercy Watson to the Rescue Book Club meeting provides time for students to reflect on which character's point of view is most like their own. Once identified, students will then complete a culminating activity that highlights their learning related to point of view as a result of their participation in this Book Club.

Use this six-question assessment to determine whether or not students understand the key concepts associated with the point of view.
